WEST ORANGE, NJ – The West Orange Arts Council (WOAC) proudly presents The Power of HER, a community exhibition in celebration of Women’s History Month, on view through March 31, 2026, at the West Orange Arts Center, 551 Valley Road, West Orange. Gallery hours are Saturdays and Sundays from 2-4pm.
Exhibiting artists include Judyann Affronti, Karen Boss, Andrew Craig Burger, Kiran Dhaliwal, Sandra Gola, Ellen Hark (see image above), Kathleen Heron, Brenda Hendrickson, Carol T. Jenkins, Joanne Leone, Orlett Pearson McCall, Olive Ross, Tamari Robin Santos, Ameerah Shabazz, and Glendora Simonson. All are invited to attend a Meet the Artists Wine & Cheese Reception on Sunday, March 8, from 4–7 PM. The event is free and open to the public.
The Power of HER uplifts art, culture, and the powerful voices of women through a vibrant showcase of creative expression. The exhibition features work in various media, including painting, drawing, photography, digital art, mixed media, printmaking, and more. Artists were invited to submit work reflecting themes connected to Women’s History Month, creating a rich and inclusive cultural dialogue.
“This exhibition is about honoring stories that deserve to be seen and heard,” said WOAC Board Member Tammy Williams, Councilwoman, Township of West Orange. “HERstory celebrates resilience, creativity, and the vital contributions of women in our community and beyond. It’s a powerful reminder that art connects us across generations and experiences.”
The exhibition arrives at a pivotal moment for the all-volunteer, nonprofit organization. In September 2025, the Township of West Orange voted to cease its municipal contribution that had subsidized rent for the West Orange Arts Center. As a result, funding support from the Township has been reduced to zero.
This sudden withdrawal of funding has created real challenges for WOAC’s ability to maintain year-round exhibits, workshops, and community programming. Funds raised through our ongoing appeal have supported critical operating needs, and sustaining our programming moving forward will require continued fundraising and strong community partnerships.
“Art and cultural activities are essential to the creative life of our town,” said Patricia Mitrano, Board Chair of the West Orange Arts Council. “Maintaining this space ensures the arts remain accessible and continue to flourish in West Orange. We are asking for moral and financial support to help sustain this important community resource.”
