West Orange Arts Council (WOAC) Chair Patricia Mitrano noted “This art exhibition was a warm embrace of creativity—a reminder that not only local talent exists here in West Orange, we also have international artists from Mexico and Nicaragua. Cultural art shows like this can stir the soul and spark dialogue. Featuring West Orange Arts Council (WOAC) members Kathleen Heron, Bismarck Treminio, and Zitro (Luis Ortiz), the show highlighted three distinct themes: Heron’s “Inner Mindscapes,” Treminio’s “Children’s Collection,” and Zitro’s “Behind the Mural.”
Kathleen Heron: Sculpting the Inner Landscape
Entering the first gallery, one was immediately drawn into Kathleen Heron’s “Inner Mindscapes”—a realm where mixed-media textiles and 3D assemblages blur the line between fabric and feeling. Heron, a seasoned New Jersey Artist and WOAC stalwart, specializes in works that layer drawing, painting, and found materials to evoke psychological depths. Her contributions include the striking 3D assemblage “Thermostat,” transforming everyday objects into metaphors for emotional introspection.
“Thermostat” stood out as a centerpiece: a sculptural piece incorporating dyed fabrics, embroidered elements, and subtle mechanical motifs that suggested the “dials” of the mind. Heron’s process, often starting with heirloom textiles, infuses each work with autobiography; building like fond memories, with colors shifting from muted to vibrant clarity.
Bismarck Treminio: Emotions Rendered in Realistic Strokes
Bismarck Treminio’s “Children’s Collection,” and more is a suite of realistic, emotive paintings that peeled back layers of childhood innocence and cultural heritage. Hailing from Nicaraguan roots, Treminio discovered drawing as a childhood companion, igniting a passion for painting at age 14. “Art became a form of expression and communication for me,” he shared through his interpreter. “Art became a reflection of my mood and a way to convey my deepest emotions.” His works in the show captured this ethos: tender portraits of children at play, interspersed with lush scenes of Nicaraguan landscapes— and workers coffee picking in sun-drenched fields under sapphire skies.
One evocative piece, an untitled portrait of a wide-eyed boy with a little dog, radiated vulnerability and joy, its hyper-realistic details—the glint of sweat on his brow, the frayed laces—drawing viewers into Treminio’s world. His style, rooted in classical realism echoes influences from his homeland’s vibrant folk art traditions. Though Treminio’s art style falls under his authenticity of humanity where he makes each canvas a portal to shared human experiences.
Zitro: Murals Unfolded on Canvas
Zitro’s “Behind the Mural,” where Luis Ortiz—known professionally as Zitro—unveiled preparatory paintings for his immersive street art at Benji’s Taqueria in downtown West Orange. A muralist whose large-scale works pulse with Mexican cultural motifs, Mural Artist, Painter, and Sculptor Zitro draws from his heritage to craft visual narratives that dialogue between past and present. “I believe that both visual art, icons of symbolism and murals have the power to touch the soul and tell stories without words. So I try to integrate these sensory experiences into my visual artwork”
This series offered an intimate peek behind the facade: smaller-scale oils and acrylics depicting Day of the Dead motifs. One standout art piece, a preparatory study for the taqueria’s facade, layered skeletal dancers with blooming marigolds, their colors popping like fireworks—ochres, crimsons, and teals evoking the synesthetic rhythm of banda music. Zitro’s style fuses street art’s boldness with fine art’s nuance, influenced by Mexico’s rich traditions yet adapted for urban New Jersey contexts. Zitro’s contemporary voice is distinctly his own: accessible, celebratory, and community-anchored.
